On Saturday, February 1, IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) hosted ‘Coaches vs Cancer’—an annual basketball tournament event benefiting cancer research. ICCP played St. Francis High School. The Girls Varsity won their game in a hotly contested match up that went to the wire. However, the rest of the IC Catholic Prep Basketball Teams did not perform as well.
I was there for the first three games, which included the Freshman Boys, JV Girls, and the Sophomore Boys. Unfortunately, the Knights lost all three of these games, which disappointed me a little bit because I was rooting for the home teams. I was really hoping to see the hometown crowd react to a win. The third game was especially close because the Knight’s sophomore boys lost in overtime. They were down at the half, yet managed to come back late in the game and almost pull off the win.
Playing baseball, myself I know how it is to lose in extra innings. That is why I could relate to the Knights student-athletes.
In coordination with the Athletic Director, I was tasked with running the official IC Catholic Prep Instagram account, including content for story creation. That is why I took videos at the beginning of the game, at half time, and at the end of the game, and I used those to provide score updates.
This was also fun because I have not yet been in charge of an Instagram account to showcase athletics (I had experience running the Instagram account for educational and classroom stories). In addition, I was in charge of selling t-shirts and cookies. Furthermore, this also was my first time attending a high school basketball game. The night prior, I attended my first high school sporting event at the ICCP Wrestling Youth Knight, where I helped out by handing out coupons and raffle tickets to young kids.
In Germany, no primary and secondary schools host or sponsor athletic teams, which is why we do not have sporting events like these. I have heard a lot about these events, which is why I was curious and interested in seeing a school event of this nature. All in all, I was not disappointed, and it was a good experience!
